Warm South Florida days make ripe fruit smell strong, which pulls an animal the last few feet into a trap it was already walking past. Freshness matters more than the exact fruit — a dried-out chunk of anything does nothing.
Baits that pull well
In our climate these are the ones I lean on, roughly in order of how bright and fragrant they are:
- Ripe mango and cantaloupe — hard to beat in the Florida heat
- Banana and strawberry for color and sugar
- Leafy greens like collards and mustard greens
- Hibiscus and other flowers they already browse in the landscaping
- Squash and other bright-colored produce
The honest limit of bait
I'll be straight with you: on a property that's already full of flowers and fruit trees, bait competes with everything growing there. Bait draws an iguana the last few feet into a trap that's on its route — it doesn't lure one across a yard that's already a buffet. Placement still does the heavy lifting.
That's why I set the trap on the route first and treat bait as the finisher. If a yard is a nonstop feast of hibiscus and ripe mangos on the tree, no chunk of fruit in a cage is more tempting than what's already there — the trap has to be sitting where the animal already walks.
