Docks are iguana magnets: warm boards, full sun, and a straight shot into the water for escape. Iguanas reach the deck by climbing the pilings, so a smooth guard — a metal or slick plastic sleeve fitted around each piling — takes away the grip and keeps them off. It's the dock version of a tree wrap, and it works for the same physics-based reason: nothing to claw into, so nothing to climb.
On a Palm Beach County canal or Intracoastal dock this pays off fast. A dock coated in iguana droppings is both a sanitation problem and a genuine slip hazard, and the acidic waste stains and degrades decking over time. Guarding the pilings once is far cheaper and less aggravating than pressure-washing the deck every week through the warm season.
Where guards fall short on their own
A piling guard only closes the climb up the piling. If iguanas can reach the dock another way, guards alone won't keep the deck clean. The usual gaps we find on waterfront lots are worth checking before you assume the guards failed.
- An adjoining seawall or bank the iguana simply walks off onto the dock
- A finger pier or ramp that connects to shore at grade
- Overhanging trees the animals drop down from
- Boat lifts, ladders, and mooring lines that offer an alternate route up
Fitting them without wrecking the dock
Good guards are fitted around the piling rather than fastened in a way that traps standing water against wood — trapped moisture is what accelerates rot, so a well-installed guard shouldn't shorten the life of the piling. On concrete pilings it's simpler; on older wood pilings we check the condition first, because a guard is worth installing on sound wood but not worth wrapping around a piling that's already failing.
Common questions
Will guards work if my dock also connects to a seawall?
Only partly. If iguanas can reach the dock by walking off an adjoining seawall or bank, piling guards alone won't do it — we look at every approach and add seawall measures where needed. Guards close one route; the whole set of approaches has to be closed for a clean dock.
Do the guards damage the pilings?
Not when they're installed right. They're fitted around the piling rather than fastened in a way that traps water against wood, so they don't accelerate rot on a properly built dock. We check older wood pilings first — a guard belongs on sound wood, not on one already rotting.
How much dock cleanup does this actually save?
On a heavily used canal dock, a lot. Once the pilings are guarded and the other approaches are closed, the droppings drop off dramatically, which is usually the difference between weekly pressure-washing and the occasional rinse.
